BLASPHEMOUS and Safe MOVIES

The Hays Code (1934–1968)
For more than 30 years, blasphemy of the Holy Name of Jesus was effectively banned from motion pictures. In response to pressure from Christian groups (especially Catholic and Protestant organizations), Hollywood imposed the Motion Picture Production Code, commonly called the Hays Code.
The Code explicitly required:

Respect for religion
No ridicule of religious faith
No profanity, including misuse of sacred names

“No film or episode should throw ridicule on any religious faith.”
— Motion Picture Production Code (1930; enforced 1934)

During this era:

Using “Jesus Christ” as a swear would get a film rejected for release
Studios complied to avoid boycotts by churches and the Catholic Legion of Decency. From 1934 to the late 1950s, blasphemy in mainstream Hollywood films was extremely rare.
