SHEEN INSTRUCTS US ON EDUCATION

- Everyone of us regrets that we did not study more when we were in school.
- A real education trains the intellect and the will and not just the mind alone.
- Our intellect should be properly trained along these 3 lines:
- TRUTH – the purpose of education is to acquaint us with truth. We have to know the truth of science, the truth of literature and above all; the truth of man. For example: we cannot make a living as an engineer if we do not know the truths of engineering.
- The one basic truth that we have to learn is the truth of our own existence. We would not have a gadget in our house 5 minutes without knowing the meaning of that gadget yet some people spend their whole lives without knowing why they are here or where they are going and when life is meaningless it is very dull. It is this absence of a goal and purpose that makes so many people full of worries, anxieties and fears. What is the use in living if we do not know the purpose of living? Therefore, the first thing that education should give us is the truth about man and why he was made.
- The ultimate purpose of man is to obtain perfect life, perfect truth and perfect love and this is the definition of God.
- Why is truth important? Well, there is a principle in psychology called ideo-motor which means every idea has a motive power which means the ideas tends to work their way out of the mind and into actions. Every idea that we have tends to lead to some form of expression of that idea. That’s why sometimes our actions betray our ideas. Some people believe that it doesn’t matter what we believe, it all depends on how we act, that is nonsense because we act upon our beliefs.
- If we put truth in our minds we will live a truly human life. If every idea works it’s way out into action then it is of vital importance to put truth into our minds. We should treat our minds the way we treat our stomachs; we do not put garbage into our stomachs. That’s why it’s important to put the right kind of thoughts in our heads.
- Socrates said that ignorance is evil but that is not true, otherwise the more educated you were, the more virtuous you wiould be. Education does not deliver us from evil; in some cases it makes clever devils instead of stupid ones and in that case, if we had to have a choice between the two, we would much prefer the stupid.
- Some suggest that we must know evil, but we ask how would we come to know it? When Satan tempted our first parents Adam and Eve in the garden of paradise, were tempted by Satan, he told them God had forbidden them to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. He deceived them by telling them that if they ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they would be like God. This was a fallacy, a lie to deceive them. You see, there are two ways to know something, either negatively or positively.
- CORRELATION OF STUDIES – We must have a correlation of studies; meaning one subject studied must be related to other subjects studied.
- DEPTH – to our studies; particularly the deepening of mystery
